National Minimum Wage Enforcement:

In the 2012-13 tax year, HMRC handed out automatic penalty charges of up to £5,000.00 to 708 employers and awarded back pay to 26,519 staff.

These included a national retailer which required employees to attend work before and after opening hours without pay and was subsequently instructed to pay wage arrears of more the £193,000 to nearly 3,500 workers; another retailer which required its employees to purchase specific items of clothing from its range as uniform and had to repay almost £170,000 to more than 6,000 staff, and a recruitment agency that required its workers to attend training at a client's business without pay had to pay £28,000 to 300 workers.
